Environment
BDL is committed about the environment and has developed green policies that are standard throughout the company.
The three main objectives set out by BDL are:
- Reduce the negative impacts on the environment
- Reduce the consumption of energy
- Improve the efficiency of our hotels
To show this commitment a company wide environmental policy has been put in place. This is monitored by a corporate group environmental committee and hotel based environmental teams are now functioning.
This committee has been implementing strategies to fulfill these objectives and as a result several changes have been made to all properties. In order to help reduce electricity consumption all hotels have installed low energy lamps and fittings, placing time clocks on equipment, fitting motion sensors, etc. Importantly by generating a culture of awareness throughout the company BDL has reduced energy consumption by 13%.
All environmental policies are upheld throughout a hotels development process. A set criterion for environmental management of all new builds, and a company environmental audit is carried out at each site bi-annually.
Water conservation is another example where fitting of water conserving shower heads, water saving aerators on taps, PIR sensors on urinals, etc have dramatically reduced consumption.
BDL has a group wide linen management system to reduce use of unnecessary chemicals and energy.
A strict recycling policy is in place where all hotels recycle the following items - cardboard, paper, magazines, cooking oils, glass, printer cartridges, light bulbs, electrical goods and cans.
BDL has created company wide awareness of its environmental effort by introducing the environmental mascot ‘Zappit’.
In its commitment to the environment and energy efficiency BDL have introduced the Green Hotel of the year award and all BDL hotels are members of the Considerate Hoteliers.
